Frequently Asked Questions — Spousal Sponsorship

How long does spousal sponsorship take in Canada in 2026?

As of 2026, outland spousal sponsorship (sponsoring from outside Canada) takes approximately 9–14 weeks. Inland spousal sponsorship (where the sponsored spouse is already in Canada) takes 12–20 weeks.

What is the difference between inland and outland spousal sponsorship?

Inland spousal sponsorship is for spouses or common-law partners who are already inside Canada. Outland sponsorship is for spouses living outside Canada. Outland processing is generally faster and allows the sponsored person to travel freely during processing.

Can my spouse work in Canada while their sponsorship is being processed?

If applying inland, your spouse may be eligible for an open work permit while their permanent residence application is being processed. Outland applicants may apply for a temporary work permit separately.

Who qualifies as a sponsor for spousal sponsorship?

To sponsor a spouse or common-law partner, you must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, at least 18 years old, not receiving social assistance (other than for disability), and able to financially support your spouse.

Can common-law partners be sponsored?

Yes. Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor common-law partners as well as spouses and conjugal partners. Common-law partners must demonstrate they have lived together for at least 12 consecutive months.
